The Gratitude Attitude

Updated: Oct 29, 2023

When I meet people with high resilience, one of the most common practices that they do is to have gratitude which is just a fancy way of saying that they are thankful. Gratitude can take many forms, so I'll go through a few ideas to get you started.

Gratitude can take the form of prayer in which you give thanks for what you have or give thanks for a prayer that was answered.

You could write in a gratitude journal where you make a daily practice of writing things for which you are grateful. A good friend once gave me a gratitude jar and enough small pieces of paper to write one thing each day to put into the jar.

You can say the same things over and over OR you can create new positive synapses in your brain if you say unique things you are grateful for each day. Some days, I stick with 3 new and unique things for which I am grateful. If I am having a particularly challenging day, I "grateful the heck out of it" which means that I continue finding new and unique things for which I am grateful until I actually feel better.

I like to use habit stacking to remind me to be grateful. When I go for a walk or take a shower, that is my cue to remind myself to say my gratefuls for the day. Habit stacking is a great tool to use when you are starting a new practice. Basically, you attach the new practice to something you are already doing so you can get into the habit of doing the new thing without adding on to your day and without having to set aside a separate time.

If you are struggling to find things for which you are grateful, try finding the silver lining. For instance, if you are having a tough day at work, your silver lining might be that at least you have a job. Finding the silver lining can be thought of as being grateful because your situation could always be worse.

What are some gratitude ideas to get your gratitude journey started? The usual things for which people are grateful are family, friends, shelter, pets, etc. Try looking around you to see new things that make you happy or that you are really glad to have.

Today, I am grateful for YOU taking the time to read this, and I am hopeful that you too can experience the magic of gratitude!

New pens! Carefully hand selected fun tablet! And I am all in...

  1. God - for giving me another day

  2. Heather - for her caring heart, words of wisdom and our long lasting friendship

  3. My boys - my biggest blessings

Happy New Year! Thank you for taking the time to share your words!!

“Habit stacking” is a great idea! I am going to start to keep my daily gratitude journal near my breakfast nook so that I can reflect on the day before while I have my morning coffee. Thanks for the inspiration!
